University of Tartu started cooperation with India’s leading medical technology company

The University of Tartu and India’s biggest medical technology company Trivitron Healthcare Pvt Ltd signed a memorandum of understanding, forming the basis of a broad scientific cooperation and furthering of medical education between India and Estonia.

The cooperation will mainly be launched in areas related to mass spectrometry, microchips, sequencing, molecular diagnostics and biobanking. “The University of Tartu holds a leading position in the area of health care and medicine in Estonia and in the Baltic Sea region. The university’s competence and means for innovative research and development activities were the reasons which motivated the major Indian enterprise to cooperate with the University of Tartu,” said Erik Puura, Vice-Rector for Development of the University of Tartu.

The cooperation will begin when the partners have decided on common topics that are of interest to the researchers while also having commercial potential. “Our aim is to initiate contacts between employees with similar interests to exchange the newest knowledge and develop solutions furthering people’s health,” commented Jane Luht, head of technology transfer at the University of Tartu, adding that exchange has already been initiated between four working groups.

The partners will also explore the opportunities to establish an educational centre for University of Tartu in India, Dubai or Shanghai affiliated to Trivitron and together promote medical education programs of University of Tartu among Indian and Asian students.

The Rector of the University of Tartu, Professor Volli Kalm signed the five-year memorandum of understanding with Gomathy SK Velu, the founder of Trivitron Healthcare Pvt Ltd company and the group, on 14 August at 12:00 at the Tallinn office of the University of Tartu. Estonian Minister of Education and Research, Mr Jevgeni Ossinovski and the Ambassador of India, Mr Aladiyan Manickam were also present at the signing, as the development of scientific cooperation has been his special interest during his term of office.
