Winner of University of Tartu IT centre architectural competition is ICONICUM

From the six works submitted, the University of Tartu chose the architectural solution called ICONICUM for the IT centre to be built on Narva road. The authors of the idea will be revealed on 19 April 2016 at 15:00 in the University Café, when the envelopes with the name cards of the winning project will be opened.

The winning design ICONICUM will receive 10 000 euros, the second place and 8000 euros goes to project TUUM. The concept proposals KERNEL and ASTMELINE will both receive 4000 euros on the proposal of the committee as a performance reward for bold, characteristic solutions with a good plan.

The selected architectural solution efficiently combines IT specialisations, mathematics and economics studies in one building, encouraging good cooperation within the faculty in studies and research.

The architectural design competition was organised with the aim to sign a service procurement contract with the winner on the basis of their proposed design. If all requirements are filled, the next step is to announce the public procurement for the development of the IT centre.

The new IT centre will comprise two parts of which the main part will be developed and built first and later it is possible to have an extension of about 5000 m2. The architectural solution must enable a simple and logical connection in the later stage of construction to ensure the daily work and movement in the building.

The committee of the architectural design competition included Head of UT Estates Office Heiki Pagel, Head of UT Institute of Computer Science Professor Jaak Vilo, Tartu City Architect Tõnis Arjus and architects Andres Kadarik, Jüri Siim and Andres Lunge.

The IT centre building with passive house elements is planned to be located on the premises at Narva mnt 4, Narva mnt 10, Narva mnt 2b and 2d in Tartu. If the project goes as planned, students and lecturers can begin studies and research in the new building in the autumn semester of 2019 the latest.
