Purpose:
The Summer School aims to: * Repair failures in the implementation of regulatory documents, caused by the structure and dynamics of the organizations that implement them. * Raise awareness of the relationship between the linguistic meaning of regulatory documents and the structure and dynamics of the organizations that house them: of the context-sensitivity of this meaning. * Endow students with skills useful to addressing this interaction between the meaning of such documents and their contexts of implementation.
Target group:
The course/Summer School is primarily aimed at MA and PhD students from all disciplines - but it is also open to undergraduate students and university workers if they have interests in the topic of the course/Summer School. Participants from Tartu will probably be limited to around 5 people. If there is a surplus of registrations, participants will be selected in order to create well-balanced teams within the course/Summer school, with participants from the other ENLIGHT network partners participating in the course/Summer School.
Outcome:
Upon completing the course, the participants will have:
* An improved understanding of how linguistic meaning is constructed both in the interpretation of regulatory documents (laws, guidelines, etc.) and in the flow of conversation wherein the documents are applied.
* An improved understanding of how to intervene to change how regulatory documents are interpreted in context.
* A greater awareness of how other disciplines besides one's own approach the problem of stabilizing meaning.
* A greater awareness of the role power plays in fixing how communal documents are interpreted.
* An enhanced awareness of the contextual risk factors to the misapplication of laws, guidelines, regulations, etc.
Starting conditions:
* Prior to the in-person component: (a) students are expected to do preparatory reading; (b) students will form teams online and each team will (i) select the problem they aim to solve during the course and (ii) select the output they aim to produce by the end of the course (something that gets their ideas to users who can benefit from it); (c) students attend some recorded online seminars which will help them prepare for the in-person component. * The in-person component will also include independent time, when students, working in their teams, apply what they learn from the seminars/workshops to the problems the teams aim to solve by the end of the course. Time for this will be scheduled into the day-time timetable i.e. it won't be extra work which students are expected to do in their evenings. * After the in-person component students will work in their teams to finish producing their team's chosen output.

If there is a surplus of registrations, participants will be selected in order to create well-balanced teams within the course/Summer school, with participants from the other ENLIGHT network partners participating in the course/Summer School. We want the teams to consist of people with complementary skills, so that each team member has something distinctive to contribute to their team's work. Possible UT participants: if interested, please send an e-mail to enlight@ut.ee by March 15. Recruitment and selection of 5 students from each of the nine ENLIGHT partner universities will be carried out by each of the institutions themselves, following local requirements. Once selected, you will be asked by the course organizer to fill out a registration form, which facilitate the construction of the student teams. Further practical information (registration, housing etc) will be sent to the selected students in due time.
