Mid-American Universities International (MAUI)

Student exchange with universities belonging to the MAUI network are carried out under the Utrecht Network.

The MAUI (Mid-American Universities International) network unites 18 universities in USA: Baylor University, Columbia College Chicago, Kansas State University, Missouri University of Science and Technology, Oklahoma State University, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Texas State University, Texas Tech University, University of Kansas, University of Missouri- Kansas City, University of Missouri St. Louis, University of Nebraska - Lincoln, University of Nebraska - Kearney, University of Nebraska  at Omaha, University of Oklahoma, University of Tulsa, West Virginia University, Wichita State University.

Scholarship
Exchange students are guaranteed free tuition at a foreign university.

Expenses for accommodation, food, travel, visa and study materials must be covered by the student.

Application process

Through UT Study Abroad Centre. Competition is held once a year (in January) and is open to Bachelor's and Master's level students of all specialities. However, in selecting a university, it is important to make sure which programmes are offered for exchange students - some universities do not admit exchange students to all specialities (law and medical studies are most commonly excluded).

When applying to MAUI-network, it is not possible to apply to AEN or REARI-RJ networks in the same year.

It is possible to apply for one or two semesters. When applying, students must submit a list of three preferred universities; and later successful applicants will be placed in one of the preferred universities by the respective committee of the Utrecht Network.

The primary decision on selecting students is made by the University of Tartu grant committee. The study abroad coordinator forwards the information of the selected students to the MAUI committee, who then places the students in foreign universities. Next, student needs to send the documents to the respective host university, who makes a final decision on the admission of the student.

As the process as a whole is quite time consuming, students applying should bear in mind that final decisions may be made as late as April or May.

Required application documents (in English):
- List of three preferred universities;
- Statement of purpose (letter of motivation);
- Letter of recommendation from a supervisor or professor at UT;
- Transcript of records (with average grade, in English; ask from your dean's office/institute);
- Certificate on command of English (IELTS, TOEFL or the test of UT College of Foreign Languages and Cultures; check the language requirements from university descriptions on MAUI webpage).
