Estonian Science Communication Awards are open for nominations

This year marks the 21st time that exceptional individuals whose efforts have helped bring science to the forefront of society will be recognised at the national level. According to Annely Allik, Head of the Department of Science Communication at ETAG, “Science needs visibility in society, but visibility alone is not enough. Effective science communication helps people understand science, engage in discussions about it, and appreciate the value of evidence-based knowledge in everyday life, decision-making, and future choices.”

Prizes

Both individuals and teams may be nominated. The prize fund is €36,000. The prizes are awarded in five categories:

• The Tiiu Sild lifetime achievement award for long-term systematic communication of science and technology;

• Science and technology communication via audio-visual and electronic media;

• Science and technology communication via printed media (articles, article series, books, etc.);

• Activities or series of activities communicating science and technology;

• Best researcher, journalist or teacher communicating science and technology;

Title of Nationally Recognised Science Communicator

All winners are allowed to use the title “Nationally Recognised Science Communicator” and the respective logo. Representing quality and trustworthiness, the title further highlights excellent science communicators and their work.

The Estonian Science Communication Award competition is organised by ETAG in cooperation with the Estonian Academy of Sciences. The prizes are funded by the Ministry of Education and Research. The competition has been organised since 2006.

The awards are traditionally presented at the annual Science Communication Conference, which this year takes place on 11 November in Tartu, at the V Spa conference centre. For more information about the conference (in Estonian), see the ETAG’s website.
