The Guild, including the University of Tartu among its members, is pleased to announce that it has joined the International Coalition for Science, Research and Innovation in Ukraine.

Launched during the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome in July 2025, the coalition brings together a broad community of stakeholders committed to supporting Ukraine’s immediate needs and the long-term recovery of its research and innovation landscape.

Through its membership, The Guild expresses its commitment to strengthen the contribution of universities to widespread efforts to rebuild Ukraine, contributing to the coalition's shared goals to

  • raise awareness of the critical role of R&I in Ukraine's reconstruction and advocacy efforts,
  • assist in the reconstruction and modernisation of Ukraine’s science and research infrastructure,
  • facilitate the mobility and integration of Ukrainian researchers during and after the war to enable them to continue their scientific work,
  • promote technology transfer to enhance Ukraine’s innovation ecosystem and
  • support Ukraine’s long-term integration into the EU and the international research community.

The Guild is committed to contributing to the high-level steering committee. With our members, we also look forward to engaging at the coalition’s technical-level meetings to foster collaboration and share current and future initiatives.

Secretary-General of The Guild network Jan Palmowski said that in joining the coalition, The Guild expresses commitment to strengthening research excellence across the European continent, for the benefit of our societies, our welfare, and our cohesiveness. “In the reconstruction of Ukraine, universities have a key part to play. As we develop our own contribution, we will listen to what needs are most pressing, build on the rich experience of our member universities in working with Ukrainian partners, and deliver based on our distinctive collective strengths,” said Palmowski.

The University of Tartu, together with leading European universities, is working to ensure that Ukrainian science and innovation emerge stronger than ever before. “As a small country, Estonia contributes where we can create added value through cooperation. Through The Guild network, we can offer Ukraine the best substantive expertise, knowledge, and partnerships to help increase Ukraine's role in the European research area,” said Tõnu Esko, Vice Rector for Development of the University of Tartu.

The coalition is a multi-stakeholder initiative which addresses the urgent and long-term recovery of Ukraine’s research and innovation sector. The initiative was launched by the Italian Ministry of University and Research, the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science, UNESCO and the European Commission by signing the Rome Declaration of Intent for Science, Research and Innovation and aims to provide a platform for stakeholders to mobilise support for Ukraine’s R&I ecosystem and advocate for its role in Ukraine’s broader recovery.
