Preliminary results of the International Student Barometer (ISB) show that international students are satisfied with their studies at the University of Tartu. They highlight strong academic quality, supportive learning conditions and the city of Tartu as an excellent living environment.
The ISB survey was conducted at the end of 2025 among international bachelor’s, master’s, and exchange students at the University of Tartu. Students were asked about their perceptions of academic and university life, support services and quality of life during their studies at the University of Tartu. The findings are preliminary – the final report will be published in March.
Academic experience
One of the most frequently mentioned strengths is the high quality of teaching and academic staff. Students describe lecturers as competent, approachable and genuinely caring about the students’ success. Clear course structures, well-designed curricula and high academic standards support a learning experience that is both demanding and rewarding.
“The professors are very supportive and truly care about students’ learning and progress.” – International master’s student
Many students also value the opportunity to engage in research early on and appreciate being treated as young colleagues rather than learners.
Supportive and personalised learning environment
Compared with larger universities, international students emphasise the benefits of smaller study groups and closer interaction with lecturers and supervisors. This approach makes asking questions, receiving feedback and feeling part of the academic community considerably easier.
“You never feel like just a number here – lecturers know you and are happy to help.” – International bachelor’s student
Tartu as a secure and calm living environment
Students describe Tartu as a student-friendly, compact city where accommodation, university buildings, libraries and leisure opportunities are all conveniently within easy reach, making everyday life simple and lowstress.
“Tartu is a perfect student city – safe, peaceful, and everything is close.” – International master’s student
Many international students also point out that the cost of living in Tartu is affordable compared to other European university towns, allowing them to focus more on their studies and student life.
The university’s international and multicultural atmosphere
Students appreciate studying alongside peers from different countries and cultures, who help create an open and inclusive atmosphere.
“It’s easy to meet people from all over the world and feel welcome as an international student.” – International exchange student
Students also mention some challenges, including limited job opportunities, particularly for those who do not speak Estonian. They note the need to adapt to the climate and dark winters, as well as occasional difficulties finding accommodation at the beginning of their studies. These factors are mostly external and unrelated to the quality of education.
Applications for international master’s studies can be submitted until 15 March, and applications for bachelor’s and integrated studies in Medicine until 15 April.
