On 28 May, as part of a state visit, the President of the Czech Republic Petr Pavel and his wife Eva Pavlová visited the University of Tartu. The delegation also included the Rector of Masaryk University Martin Bareš and Ambassador Zdeněk Beránek.
At the invitation of President Alar Karis, the President of the Czech Republic and his wife were on a state visit to Estonia on 27–28 May. On 28 May, the delegation, together with President Alar Karis and his wife Sirje Karis, visited Tartu. In the afternoon, the Mayor of Tartu Urmas Klaas held a festive reception for the guests at Town Hall Square. The delegation then proceeded to the University of Tartu main building, where they were welcomed by Rector Toomas Asser.
In the university’s senate hall, a cooperation agreement between the University of Tartu and Masaryk University was signed, reaffirming the long-standing and ongoing collaboration between the two institutions. This agreement includes, among other topics, clauses about student exchange, joint research projects and the expansion of academic contacts.
After the signing of the agreement, Rector Martin Bareš presented Rector Toomas Asser with the Masaryk University Gold Medal in recognition of the long-standing cooperation between the universities and of the outstanding commitment to advancing education. Then, the Czech presidential couple and their delegation met Czech citizens studying and working at the University of Tartu.
The visit continued at the University of Tartu Museum, where the Czech Embassy held a reception in honour of the President of the Republic of Estonia. This was followed by an official departure ceremony in front of the museum, marking the end of the state visit.
