In 2026, University of Tartu’s early-career researchers who are parents can apply for a mobility grant helping to cover childcare-related expenses arising from participation in international academic events. The initiative aims to support the development of research careers and international research cooperation at different stages of life.

The mobility grant increases the international visibility and collaboration opportunities of early-career researchers – particularly women – and creates better opportunities for participating in research. With the grant, the university promotes equal opportunities and supports the development of researchers in the international research community, helping to ensure a strong new generation.

Research indicates that childcare responsibilities significantly restrict the career progression and international mobility of early-career researchers. Short-term trips abroad are often the only realistic way for researchers with young children to participate in academic mobility. The mobility grant helps to alleviate these obstacles and enables researchers to participate in academic work alongside their family responsibilities.

The grant can be used to cover travel and accommodation costs for the child and, where necessary, the carer, or the fee for childcare services offered at the location of the academic event. This enables early-career researchers who are parents to take part in conferences, seminars and cooperation meetings even when it would otherwise be difficult.

The applicant must be the university’s academic staff member who defended their doctoral degree no more than 15 years ago. Employees on parental leave may also apply.

More information about the application requirements can be found on the university’s intranet.
