It aims to give an overview of the fate of the Czech Jewish population focusing primarily on the pivotal events in the history of the Jewish nation in the previous century. By relating the stories of individual persons it sheds light on the Jewish contribution to the development of Europe. The exposition has been compiled by Jan Kratochvil, a reputed Czech historian, Director of the Museum of Czech and Slovak Exiles located in Brno.

#pict2p#According to Jan Kratochvil, one important aspect of the tragic history of Jews has until now largely escaped the attention of the general public – their persecution by the communist regime. “It is extremely important to show that the communist regime dealt with its opponents just as ruthlessly as the Nazis – members of the opposition were persecuted, they were hunted down, and spied on by informers, which in turn led to imprisonments, concentration camps and executions,” writes Kratochvil in the text accompanying the exhibition.

The exhibition was brought to Tartu under the sponsorship of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Tallinn. It will remain on show until 19 April.
