The vice rector for academic affairs directs the field of academic affairs and is responsible for the studies and organisation of studies at the level of bachelor’s and master’s studies and medical residency, the organisation and development of continuing education and activities intended for school students, and performing other tasks imposed by the university bylaws. The vice rector for academic affairs organises the work of the Office of Academic Affairs, the Student Union Office and coordinates the activities of the Youth Academy.

The vice rector for development is responsible for knowledge transfer, the protection of intellectual property, the university's business relations and the entrepreneurial spirit of the university's staff, the preparation and implementation of the strategic plan, the development of a sustainable university and international institutional cooperation. The vice rector for development coordinates the activities of the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, the International Cooperation and Protocol Office, the University of Tartu Museum and the Natural History Museum and Botanical Garden.
