Korean Festival brings a diverse cultural programme to Tartu

On 15–20 October, the Korean Festival will give Tartu’s public the chance to experience Korean culture, music and film, as well as participating in an academic symposium covering a wide range of topics from Korean economy and politics to language and literature.

„Korean culture is not well known in Estonia, but there are a number of parallels in Estonian and Korean history and culture, including a deep interest in the importance of language maintenance and cultural preservation in the face of a turbulent history, as well as a drive to develop cutting-edge IT solutions,“ says Virve-Anneli Vihman, head of internationalisation at the University of Tartu, adding that the University has recently established bilateral partnerships with Korean universities. „This week will also introduce Korean life and culture to students who may become interested in spending a semester abroad in Korea.“

The festival presents a diverse programme, including a photo exhibition „Korean Life“, a Korean modern film programme, and traditional music concerts. An academic symposium will be held on 20 October, the 2nd Baltic-Korean International Symposium: Creative Cooperation, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Estonia and Korea.

The festival is supported by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to Finland, Busan International Film Festival, Tartu City Government, Pusan National University and the University of Tartu.
