Scholarship information

On this page you can find information about different scholarships available for applicants and students of the University of Tartu.

Tuition-waiver student places

All English-taught bachelor's programmes are fee based.

Many English taught master´s programmes, still not all, offer student places with a tuition waiver for the EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and permanent residents.

Starting from the 2026/2027 academic year, admitted citizens and permanent residence permit holders of EU/EEA countries or Switzerland are exempt from tuition fees in the following master’s programmes:

A tuition waiver student place means that the student will be released of the tuition fee if the nominal study load requirement is met. Nominal study load is completed if no more than 6 credits are missing from the 30 ECTS workload per semester. If students on tuition-waiver student places fail to complete sufficient amount of credits per semester, they have to pay for the credits not earned.

  • The Gilman International Scholarship Programme

Offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world. More info.

  • NSEP David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships

The National Security Education Programme (NSEP) awards scholarships to American students for study of world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America & the Caribbean, and the Middle East). Scholarships are intended to provide support to U.S. undergraduates who will pursue the study of languages and cultures currently underrepresented in study abroad and critical to U.S. national security. NSEP emphasizes the importance of language study as a major component of a study abroad programme. More info.

  • The Healthline Stronger Scholarship Program

Healthline launched the Healthline Stronger Scholarship in 2017 to support college students using their education to improve the health and wellness landscape. Each year, they partner with a mission-driven organization to pick a different health and wellness theme. . Learn more about the scholarship and how to apply at Healthline.

  • Fulbright US Student Programmes

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright U.S. Student Programme offers opportunities for recent graduates, postgraduate candidates, and developing professionals and artists to conduct career-launching study and research abroad. More info.

  • Fulbright full grants for EU

Awards are offered to graduate students and advanced Doctoral candidates with projects that focus on the new mechanisms for supranational governance emerging within the administrative framework of the European Union (EU). Consideration is given to clearly-defined projects that require a student's presence at EU institutions in Brussels and in Luxembourg, in other member states of the EU. More info.

  • Fulbright full grants for Estonia:

Graduate students are preferred. More info.

  • Boren Fellowships

Fellowships of up to $30,000 awarded for study of world regions critical to U.S. interests, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America & the Caribbean, and the Middle East. Fellows may seek support for a combination of domestic and foreign study; stronger proposals often include significant time abroad. Focus on geographic areas, languages and fields of study seen as critical to U.S. national security, drawing on a broad definition of national security, including military, political, environmental and social concerns. Boren Scholarships are intended to provide support to students who study languages and cultures currently underrepresented in study abroad. Study of a foreign language is an integral part of every Boren proposal. More info.

Canadian Federation of University Women offers several scholarships and fellowships for female students and mostly for graduate studies. More info.

Finnish students please consult KELA or CIMO for the various social and financial security benefits provided to students studying abroad.

Citizens and residents of Germany can benefit from the The German Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) in order to fund their studies abroad. For more information in German read here.
