Renovation of dormitory at Nooruse 7 in Tartu is complete

The renovation of the dormitory located at Nooruse 7 in Tartu has been completed. In the autumn, 323 students of the University of Tartu will move in the dormitory.

According to Heiki Pagel, head of the University of Tartu's Estates Office, the condition of the building was poor as it had remained relatively unchanged since the beginning of construction. "The student building at Nooruse 7 was built in 1987, at a time when construction methods, material availability and quality were inferior. Now, after the renovation, another entirely modern and energy-efficient dormitory awaits students," said Pagel.

As part of the renovation, the façade and roof of the building were insulated and the foundation waterproofed. The old wooden windows were replaced, all the furnishings were changed and the interior was redecorated. New elevators were also installed in the building.

To ensure a good indoor climate and energy efficiency, the dormitory was equipped with a mechanical ventilation system with heat exchange and an automatic control system for all utility systems. A 40 kW solar power plant was installed on the roof of the building. Bicycles can now be parked in two lockable shelters with space for 90 bikes. In addition, the dormitory's outdoor areas and car parks were refurbished and electric car charging stations placed.

The building is divided into apartments, each with one single and one double room, shower, toilet and fridge. There is one communal kitchen for every four apartments. The dormitory also has a couple of two-bedroom apartments and a one-bedroom studio apartment with a private kitchen. The ground floor has a gym, a laundry room and utility rooms.

Application for places in the dormitory at Nooruse 7 started on 15 July and most of them have been filled. The dormitory is located close to the Maarjamõisa academic buildings (Physicum, Chemicum and Biomedicum) of the University of Tartu. A new academic and research building is planned in the same area, which will house the Institute of Technology, Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, Institute of Pharmacy, and the Institute of Bioengineering.

The total cost of the construction, including VAT, was 9.6 million euros, of which 700,000 euros were paid by Tartu Student Village for furniture and fittings. The main designer of the renovation was Projekt O2 OÜ and the builder was AS Tartu Ehitus.
