PROGRAMME: Master's in Informational Technology Law

Why did you choose to study this programme?

As a lawyer, I handled cases in diverse areas of law except for IT law, because in Nigeria, the concept of IT-Law is relatively new. There are different concepts related to IT law that have not been fully explored in my home country, for instance, data privacy and other regulations of AI. Thus, studying IT law created an opportunity to learn more and discover its potential application in my home country irrespective of jurisdiction. The University of Tartu situated in one of the most technologically advanced countries in Europe was the best choice, it offered an extensive programme to train students who want to pursue a career in IT law by transforming them into highly skilled IT experts needed in law firms, government agencies, international organisations, IT corporations, etc. I chose this prestigious university because it provides lectures and consultations from legal practitioners and IT professionals from across the world who coordinate legal education with technical advancement in the ICT industry, allowing me to become acquainted with real-life legal tech challenges, and learn how to approach and handle them. The programme will allow me to have a comprehensive understanding of IT law by providing a systematic understanding of the key subfields of IT law and the requisite skills needed to effectively practice in this field. The University of Tartu’s programme will help enhance my basic training in computer education, as it offers education in law and computer-related technical training. Therefore, the transition from a litigation law to an IT lawyer is effortless because of the extensive programme at the University of Tartu.

Why Estonia?

The four seasons! That was the first attraction, as someone from sub-Saharan Africa, experiencing all four seasons has been a dream, and Estonia offered that on a platter, from the cloudy autumn skies to the windy snowy winter, followed by the breezy springtime and the gentle summer spiced with lightning. I am so glad I will be able to experience it all. Another reason I chose Estonia was because of its size, for some reason, smaller countries are more appealing to me, in terms of size and population density, again, as a Nigerian, a country with less than 1.5 million people is paradise. I also wanted to meet people with diverse cultures, the University of Tartu offered that diversity, and it was a no-brainer choice for me. Finally, as one of the leading technological countries in Europe, there was no better option than Estonia to study IT Law and experience life on the other side of the spectrum. I am glad that I picked Estonia because I somehow have made life-long friends.
