President of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to visit the University of Tartu

On 9 October, the President of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will visit the University of Tartu, where he will give a speech “Democracy and the Geostrategic Situation in Europe and the World” at 14:15 at the assembly hall. The university family and all others are welcome to listen and ask questions. 

The state visit of the President of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to Estonia lasts from 7 to 10 October. On 9 October, the Portuguese delegation will arrive in Tartu and will be welcomed by Mayor Urmas Klaas. They will then proceed to the university's main building, where the president will be received by Vice Rector for Research Mari Moora. The President of Estonia Alar Karis accompanies the Portuguese head of state on his visit to the university.

At 14:15 at the assembly hall, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will give his speech in English “Democracy and the Geostrategic Situation in Europe and the World“ followed by a discussion with students and other audience members. 

The delegation will then visit the University of Tartu Museum and the president will open the English-language exhibition "The Legacy of a Carnation" in the museum’s White Hall. The exhibition marks 50 years from the Carnation Revolution which took place in Portugal. The visit to Tartu ends with a tour of the Estonian National Museum. 

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is a Portuguese politician, academic and professor of law, and President of Portugal since 2016. He has also worked for many years as a political observer and journalist. In 2019, President Kersti Kaljulaid awarded him the Order of Merit of the Cross of Terra Mariana, Collar Class.
