New exciting ideas to be presented in the final of Delta X 2021

The first edition of the Delta X student competition initiated by the University of Tartu reaches its final on 27 January. From among nearly one hundred submitted solutions, the best will be decided in four categories.

The Delta X competition aims to give secondary school and university students an opportunity to test their skills and apply their acquired knowledge in practice. There are four categories: robotics, digital solutions, business models and mathematics. More than one hundred students from all across Estonia will take part in the final.

An initiator of Delta X, Professor Alvo Aabloo says that the greatest advantage of the competition is the meeting of different fields. “The motivation for creating such a competition was to promote cooperation. We believe that the competition helps to take the synergy between the researchers from different fields to students,” said Aabloo. According to the project manager of Delta X, Marketing and Communications Specialist at the UT Institute of Technology Mare Vahtre, students have shown keen interest in the first edition of the competition. “It gives young people an excellent opportunity to test their skills and I believe that tomorrow’s final will be very exciting. Participants’ great interest is a clear sign that such a competition is needed, and hopefully, there will be even more competition categories in the future,” said Vahtre.

In the final, participants will present the solutions they have come up with. For instance, in the business models category, the team Mycoo wants to build and develop urban mushroom farms to provide restaurants and consumers with fresh and high-quality gourmet mushrooms. One team will present their solution helping people to remember and organise taking their medicines. Very diverse ideas will be presented in the digital solutions category. The mobile game SwingFinity, for instance, is about a robot destroying asteroids. In the mathematics category, one project uses Simpson’s paradox to explain that the analysis of collected data needs to be thought through. In the robotics category, robot basketball and autonomous drone challenge take place.

The best teams will be awarded cash prizes and advice for making their ideas come true. Also, Statistics Estonia and the company YEInternational have offered prizes. Experts of the corresponding fields will assess the competition projects.
