Purpose:
The program aims to enhance research supervisory practices by exploring key aspects such as doctoral candidate selection, managing progress, skills development, and final defense preparation. It provides an opportunity for both new and experienced supervisors to improve their approaches, share experiences, and discuss challenges, informed by international best practices.
Target group:
The programme is designed for doctoral supervisors in the fields of medicine, health, neurosciences, pharmacy, exercise, and sport sciences. It is suitable for both experienced supervisors who have guided multiple PhD candidates and those new to supervision.
Outcome:
Supervisor of a doctoral student who has completed the programme:
1. Understands how to apply best international practices in doctoral supervision.
2. Can assess the suitability and potential of doctoral students in their field to ensure their success.
3. Acquires the skills to manage interactions with their doctoral students in a way that makes efficient use of both the supervisor's and the doctoral candidate's time.
4. Understands the importance of transferable skills and their role in the professional development of the doctoral candidate.
5. Understands research ethics.
6. Acquires skills in how to prevent and resolve conflicts that may arise during the supervision of doctoral students.
7. Is able to support their doctoral students more effectively in preparing for the defence of their dissertation.
8. Understands the importance of continuous professional development in the role of supervisor and acquires the skills to continuously improve his/her supervision practice.

Topic Credit Lectors
1. Session 1- Growing excellence in research supervision
Learning Aims: At the end of this session, supervisors will understand the importance of excellence in supervisory practice in the University of Tartu and what developments and drivers are in place internationally.

Session 2 - Determining ‘Doctorateness’ in PhD candidates - Identifying doctoral traits in potential candidates
Learning Aims: By doing this activity, supervisors will determine the traits that are appropriate for potential success in doctoral candidates in their disciplinary area.

Session 3 - How to be a successful supervisor when time is limited - valuable tools and tips.
Learning Aims : Following this session, research supervisors will have access to key tools and approaches which will enable them to manage their students’ expectations of the doctoral programme and make the most out of supervisory meetings with students, thus managing their time more effectively.

Session 4 - The Skills Agenda in doctoral education - transferable skills & the role of the supervisor
Learning Aims : Supervisors who complete this session will have an understanding of the international requirement to incorporate transferable skills in doctoral education, what the funders say and what a supervisor’s role in their students’ professional development is.

Session 5 – Ethical conduct of research & research integrity
Learning Aims: Supervisors attending this session will be reminded of the fundamental importance of research integrity and performing research ethically, including the key ethical approval processes in the University of Tartu.

Session 6 – Common challenges, having difficult conversations and conflict resolution
Learning Aims : Supervisors who attend this session will gain an understanding of the common challenges faced by research students and supervisors and will look at ways of managing these challenges before they become more serious problems.

Session 7- Preparation for the final defence
Learning Aims : Supervisors attending this session will learn ways in which they can better support their students in preparing for the final oral defence. They will also have an understanding of local examination processes.

Session 8- Professional development for supervisors – reflecting on practice.
Learning Aims: Supervisors attending this session will have the opportunity to consider how they should engage with career- long professional development and how they can interrogate their own supervisory practice, with a view to constantly improving their practice over time.

The programme will be led by Dr. Janet Carton, a leading expert in doctoral supervision training, currently Head of Graduate Studies & Research Strategy at University College Dublin (UCD). Dr. Carton has over 20 years of experience in developing research supervision practices and has led several international projects, sharing her expertise globally.

Full participation in auditorium work.
