Academic building of the Institute of Sport Sciences and Physiotherapy and the renewed sports complex now open

On 15 January, the new academic and research building of the Institute of Sport Sciences and Physiotherapy of the University of Tartu and the sports complex extension were officially opened. The total cost of the works exceeded 10 million euros.

According to Priit Kaasik, Head of the Institute of Sport Sciences and Physiotherapy, the new building offers improved conditions for teaching physiotherapy and training coaches and physical education teachers. There are also rooms for research.

The lecture rooms and research laboratories of the institute were earlier located in three buildings in different parts of Tartu. “We are particularly pleased that we are now in the same complex, which allows us to develop both teaching and research activities much more effectively. I can already see the effect of this change on our students and colleagues: they are more enthusiastic. Our next task to be worthy of this new building,” said Kaasik. He added that creating a modern academic and research environment was especially important for physiotherapy students and teaching staff.

He said that the extension of the complex was as important. “Now the sport study and training environments are brought together so that applied research studies can be offered to athletes and students can use a more extensive practical training base,” Kaasik underlined.
