UT improved its position in world’s most reputable university rankings

In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, published yesterday evening, UT holds the highest place of all times—it placed 301–350.

THE rankings, which is published since 2004, is considered the world’s most reputable and objective university ranking which compares world research universities across all core missions. The ranking considers 13 performance indicators which are grouped into five areas: the learning environment (30% of the final result), research (30%), citations i.e. research influence (30%), industry income (2.5%) and international outlook (7.5%).

Compared to last year’s ranking, UT has considerably improved its results in four of the five indicator groups, especially in research influence (number of citations per publication) where UT placed in the second decile. This year the bibliometric analysis by THE considered in addition to 12 million research articles more than half a million books and chapters which ensures the better representation of the arts and humanities.

For this year’s ranking THE evaluated 1,313 universities and ranked 980 of them. The ranking does not include universities with a very narrow specialisation and those with a research production of less than 150 articles a year for the past five years (2011–2015). Tallinn University of Technology is the second Estonian university in the ranking and placed 601–800.

In September, the QS World University Rankings, which lists 800 world’s best universities, was also published and UT had its all-time best result there as well placing 347.
