Faculty of Social Sciences nominated Professor Raul Eamets as rector candidate

At the meeting on 9 February, the council of the Faculty of Social Sciences decided to nominate professor Raul Eamets as a rector candidate of the University of Tartu.

Raul Eamets is an economist, Professor of Macroeconomics, and the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. He says that the rector’s task is to be visible also outside the university and ensure that policy decisions on higher education and research funding are implemented. “Much work still needs to be done to ensure that the importance of higher education, its funding and development would not remain just a topic in the political parties’ pre-election debates,” said the professor.

I believe that my seven-year career as the faculty’s dean and member of the Rector’s Office has given me the necessary experience and competence to manager in the rector’s position.

Raul Eamets

Raul Eamets was born on 5 July 1964 in Pärnu and completed secondary education in Sindi in 1982. In 1987, he graduated from the Faculty of Law of Tartu State University. Since 1 January 2016, he has been the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

As an author of several Estonian and international research studies and analyses, Eamets has participated in public debates on the Estonian labour market, migration policy and education policy. His research focuses include the labour market flexibility, the compatibility of the education system with labour market needs, the pay gap and the development of Estonia’s macroeconomic environment. In recent years, he has dealt with the topics of education and future skills, global trends and migration policy. All in all, Raul Eamets has published 155 scientific publications. In addition, he has been the principal investigator or a researcher in 32 research projects. He has supervised the writing of 9 doctoral and 39 master’s theses.
