Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology and Professor in Geology
Leho Ainsaar was submitted by the council of the Institute of Ecology and Earth Sciences and the council of the Estonian Marine Institute.
I have given my consent to run as a dean candidate for the second term of office because I feel the support of my colleagues from the faculty’s institutes. Having now led the large Faculty of Science and Technology for four years, I have tried to steer the balancing and mutually supportive development of life and environmental sciences, physical and exact sciences, all of which have quite different traditions and challenges. This period has passed very quickly, and I feel I can still play a part in developing the faculty and supporting collaboration. We still have a lot to do to further develop the working environment and infrastructure, especially in the Maarjavälja area. Research and education worldwide are rapidly changing towards interdisciplinarity; the centuries-old boundaries between different disciplines no longer function as earlier. This is why also the structure of the faculty and the cooperation networks between the institutes are constantly changing and we have to keep up with the times. The faculty and its working environment are becoming increasingly international, which involves opportunities and challenges. I feel I am able to continue to contribute to both the coordination of the development of institutes as well as to university governance as a member of the Rector’s Office also in the next period.
