Professor Raul Eamets

On February 9 professor Raul Eamets was submitted as a candidate by the council of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Raul Eamets is a Professor of Macroeconomics, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and an Estonian economist. He was born on 5 July 1964 in Pärnu and completed his secondary education in 1982 at Sindi Secondary School. He graduated from the Faculty of Law of Tartu State University in 1987, earned his master's degree in economics at the University of Tartu in 1993 and defended his doctoral degree in economics in 2001. Raul Eamets has gone through all career stages at the university, starting as an intern researcher in 1987. In 2005, he was elected the Professor of Macroeconomics. In the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Raul Eamets was the head of the Institute of Economics from 2006 to 2014 and the dean from 2014 to 2015. Since 1 January 2016, he has been the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.  

As an author of several Estonian and international research studies and analyses, Eamets has participated in public debates on the Estonian labour market, migration policy and education policy. His research focuses include the labour market flexibility, the compatibility of the education system with labour market needs, the pay gap and the development of Estonia's macroeconomic environment. In recent years, he has dealt with the topics of education and future skills, global trends and migration policy. Raul Eamets has published 155 scientific publications and been the principal investigator or a researcher in 32 research projects. Over the last five years, he has led or co-led (with Professor Tammaru) four RITA projects totalling €2.2 million.  

From 2017 to 2022, Raul Eamets has had many media appearances: 95 radio and TV appearances, 53 newspaper articles, interviews and online coverages, and 31 public lectures. In 2018, he led the expert group on competitiveness of the "Estonian Education and Research Strategy 2021–2035" and, in 2021, was the Estonian co-author of the "Visionary report on Estonia-Sweden future cooperation". He has also participated in the sectoral expert panel of the OSKA programme and has chaired the Estonian Fiscal Council since 2014. From 2004–2009, he was a member of the Supervisory Board of Eesti Pank.  

He has supervised the writing of 9 doctoral and 39 master's theses. On four occasions, economics students have elected him as their favourite lecturer. He has also received the University of Tartu Medal and Badge of Distinction.
