Psychological counselling

Psychological counselling aims to support students if problems arise during their studies or in their personal lives. All University of Tartu students, including doctoral students, students from the Pärnu and Narva Colleges and the Viljandi Culture Academy can get free psychological counselling.

Psychologists at the University of Tartu can provide assistance in the event of questions or problems relating to:

  • motivation to study and use of time;
  • exam or public speaking stress;
  • worry and anxiety;
  • adapting to new environments and excessive stress;
  • communication and relationships;
  • self-assertion;
  • self-esteem;
  • low mood or burnout; and
  • difficult events or experiences in life.

Psychologists at the University of Tartu do not provide healthcare services. During counselling, we do not diagnose mental disorders (e.g. ADHD), nor do we provide prescriptions or long-term psychotherapy. In such cases, please consult your family doctor (perearst). If you don't have a family doctor yet, please see eesti.ee.

If you feel you are in a crisis and need immediate help, please turn to the Psychiatry Clinic of Tartu University Hospital, which offers emergency reception 24 h. Address: Raja str 31, phone: +372 731 8764

Support groups

Once per academic year, UT Counselling Centre offers group counselling sessions for students experiencing study-related anxiety.

The focus is on anxiety related to studying (primarily exam and performance anxiety), but the skills acquired can also be applied to other areas of life. In group counselling, participants can explore their anxiety, as well as the thoughts and feelings associated with it, and learn to manage both their thoughts and their attention. Working on the topic in a group provides peer support, which can also help alleviate performance anxiety. Group meets 6 times.

In autumn semester 2026/27, the first meeting will take place on Wednesday, 14 October 2026 from 16:00 to 18:00 in the Counselling Centre seminar room (room 454). Subsequent sessions will be held on Wednesdays 21 October, 28 October, 4 November, 11 November, and 18 November, from 16:00 to 18:00. In addition, there will be one follow-up session in January.

The group size is 8-12 participants. If fewer than 8 participants register, the group will not be opened. Places are given on a first-come, first-served basis, and participants will also have an individual meeting before the start of the group counselling to discuss expectations and the format of the sessions.

To register, please email [email protected] by 5 October 2026 the latest.

Where else can you find help?

You can get initial support from people close to you, your family, friends, fellow students, and colleagues. But there are also several organisations who offer help from outside the university, many of whom also offer their services in English:

The quickest way to get help outside the university is to ask your family doctor for a condition assessment, initial treatment recommendations, and a referral to psychological counselling, if needed.
