Academy of Sciences elected new research professors

The board of the Estonian Academy of Sciences has elected three new academy research professors for 2022–2024 from the 16 researchers who participated in the competition.

The elected research professors are Tiit Tammaru, Professor of Urban and Population Geography, Academician, and Tanel Tenson, Professor of Technology of Antimicrobial Compounds, both of the University of Tartu, and Tenured Full Professor Tõnis Kanger of Tallinn University of Technology.

In the next three years, Tiit Tammaru plans to focus his research on the rapidly changing spatial patterns reflecting occupational change, mobility and inequality in society. Tanel Tenson will study chronic bacterial infections and their treatment. Tõnis Kanger will concentrate on the development of new multifunctional and flexible halogen bonding catalysts.

The position of academy research professor allows a recognised researcher who leads research studies and supervises doctoral students at a research and development institution or university to reduce their teaching and administrative workload and focus more on research in their favourite field. At an annual conference, the elected academy research professors present an overview of their work in the past year.

The grant for academy research professors was established in 2002. All in all, 21 researchers have been elected to the position in seven competitions. Four of them were members of the academy at the time they were elected, and another five have become academicians subsequently.
