Ambassador of Armenia visited the University of Tartu

On Monday, 2 December, the Armenian Ambassador, Ara Margarian, paid a visit to Tartu and the University of Tartu.

The ambassador met the Mayor of Tartu, Urmas Klaas, and then visited the university. With Rector Toomas Asser, they discussed promoting research cooperation and student mobility between universities. Ambassador Margarian gave the rector an overview of the modern university campus, built near Yerevan to bring together the country’s major universities and their support units.

The ambassador was given a tour of the main building and was shown the lecture room named after Khachatur Abovian. The Armenian educator and founder of the modern Armenian literary language, Khachatur Abovian (1809–1848), was a graduate of the University of Tartu and has long symbolised the historical cultural links between Estonia and Armenia.

Ambassador Ara Margarian took office in February this year and is based in Vilnius. This was his first visit to Tartu.
