Renowned learning analytics expert introduces method to measure teaching efficiency

On 28 April at 16 at the UT Centre of Educational Innovation (Lossi 38–229), lecture “Innovative Tool to Measure Analytics on Teaching & Learning Automatically, Objectively and in Real-Time” is held by Professor Izhar Haq of the University of Oxford who has worked in universities in Great Britain, Canada, the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan. According to Professor Izhar Haq, we all strive for quality education—students work hard for years to acquire the knowledge and skills required for their future career, parents invest in their children’s education, enterprises spend big amounts to develop new educational products and services.

Quality education guarantees the long-term success of an individual and a country. Unfortunately, educational standards are falling and this has become a problem everywhere in the world. Teaching has become a popularity contest—teachers who are popular among students are often forced to do it on the account of teaching quality. Teaching which is oriented only on excellent test and exam results is also a problem. The first type of teachers gets good feedback from students. Demanding, strict and thorough teachers, however, must accept poorer opinions. Currently, there are no objective methods to measure the efficiency of teaching.

In his lecture, Professor Haq introduces an innovative method to measure the efficiency of teaching using the new Teaching and Learning Slides (TLS) tool.

The TLS tool is easy to use, inexpensive, does not need any special devices to be applied and is therefore suitable for richer and poorer countries. TLS is not another Moodle, it is an entirely analytical engine which generates data on teaching and learning automatically, objectively and in real time.

Professor Izhar Haq has studied teaching, research, innovation and social topics for 25 years, received several awards and established research centres.

Recently, he founded a technology incubation centre at the American University in the Emirates, the aim of which is to promote entrepreneurship in the social and technology sector. He works as CEO of the company Smart Education System in Great Britain.

Haq has specialised on the computational models of optimisation and random processes and developed numerous algorithmic methods to measure the key performance indicators of teaching and learning efficiency.
