Tartu University Rock Plays a Deciding Game

[[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"41899","attributes":{"alt":"","title":"","class":"media-image","typeof":"foaf:Image","wysiwyg":1}}]]Tartu University Rock, arguably the surprise team in the EuroCup, will fight against Perm Ural Great, a former Russian champion and a player in the strongest European competition EuroLeague. In the EuroCup quarter-final, the teams have met twice. On 19th of February Rock beat Ural Great in Tartu, but a week later fell short at the Perm team abroad. The third game will be the deciding one.

Tanel Tein, one of the leading Rock players told after recent defeat in Russia that now everything depends on home audience. If Rock fans support the team with all their heart, the team is capable to win. Tartu audience and Rock fan club are known as the most emotional and competent in Estonia.

FIBA EuroCup is the third important basketball league in Europe and only once before did an Estonian team make its way into the European league quarter-final. Rock plays in FIBA EuroCup since 2002, however never before did it reach the quarter-final. This time proved to be different – Rock topped Qualifying Round Group A with five wins and just one defeat.

Tickets will be on sale from 5.30 pm at the Centre. About Tartu University Rock

Tartu University basketball team was established in 2000 when Tartu Delta merged with the University of Tartu Academic Sports Club. Surprisingly, the fledgling team soon won Estonian Championship, defeating the experienced Tallinn Kalev. Since then, Rock has become the most beloved sports team in whole Tartu. The team can take pride in having won Estonian championships four times in 2000, 2001, 2004 and 2007. Every year Tartu Rock and Tallinn Kalev met in the final game, giving shape to a positive sporting confrontation between the two cities.
