Starting from autumn, the University of Tartu will increase the speed of wireless internet in the student residences of the Student Village, ensuring faster access to data-intensive services. For that, new cabling has been installed and new WiFi access points have been bought. In connection with the upgrade, the University of Tartu will be providing the WiFi service, which will be free of charge for those living in the student residences.
“Students need a good computer network for their studies. Most devices students use are mobile devices and for that reason, there must be a good WiFi network in the student residences,” said Lauri Anton, Head of the Infrastructure and Support Service of the Information Technology Office of the University of Tartu.
The University of Tartu and Tartu Student Village decided to set up a new WiFi network in the student residences, so that students would have the opportunity to watch high-quality video lectures and use other data-intensive services where they live.
“The network supports the WiFi standard 802.11ac, which in theory enables a data transmission speed of more than 300 Mbit/s. The actual speed will depend on both the user’s WiFi device as well as the utilisation of the network,” said Anton. By now, the new devices have been installed in the Pepleri 14 and Tiigi 14 buildings. Other student residences will get the new network during the next month.
The name of the new WiFi network is eduroam, which is probably familiar to many from the study buildings of the university. In this network, users are authenticated using the university’s central username and password.
The WiFi service is administered by the IT Office of the University of Tartu; external connection is ensured by the Estonian Education and Research Network EENet.
