On Monday, 30 August at 10, the festive opening of the 2021/2022 academic year takes place in front of the University of Tartu main building. 4,339 new students join the student body of the University of Tartu.

The sTARTUp Day business festival takes place at the Estonian National Museum from 25 to 27 August. More than 150 inspiring speakers get on stage in the three-day programme, and over 100 business ideas will be presented to entrepreneurs and investors. The recent stage of coronavirus prevalence study led by the University of Tartu confirms that vaccine protects against falling ill but a vaccinated person may still be a virus carrier. Because of a change in the sample, this stage of the study allows to draw reliable conclusions about vaccinated people only, and not about the entire adult population.

At the end of 2020, the University of Tartu mascot contest attracted a total of 97 submitted designs. The university family selected “Tiksu” by Lennart Rikk as the winning design. The design has now been developed further and Tiksu is ready to meet the university family at the end of August.

Travelling exhibition of the University of Tartu “Through hardships to the stars” allows people in five Estonian cities to get to know the stories of people connected to the university who have dared to take risks and face failure and showed determination in reaching for the stars. The exhibition created in cooperation with the University of Tartu Museum was opened today, 18 May, in Tallinn Telliskivi Creative City. From June, it will move on to Viljandi, Pärnu, Narva and Tartu.

The University of Tartu’s alumni network UTalumni, opened in 2016, will be closed soon. According to an analysis conducted at the university, the network failed to meet the users’ expectations, and our alumni prefer to stay in touch with the university via social media channels. The university has already started to develop social media to strengthen the alumni community, bring them closer to the university and develop professional cooperation with them.

One of this year’s 6,000-euro young talent awards of the L’Oreal Baltic For Women in Science Programme was granted to Mari-Ann Lind, University of Tartu doctoral student in animal ecology.
