This year, 10,808 people applied for first and second-level studies at the University of Tartu, submitting 14,863 applications. A total of 1,276 applicants submitted 1,512 applications for non-Estonian-taught studies.

The University of Tartu offers admission to 29 English-taught curricula, including 26 master’s programmes, two bachelor’s programmes and an integrated curriculum in Medicine. According to current figures, 632 students, including 414 international students, wish to study in English-taught curricula.

For Estonian-taught studies, 11,294 applications were submitted at the first level and 3,569 at the master’s level this year. Compared to last year, the number of applications for first-level studies increased by 14% and the number of applications for master’s studies grew by 23%. The most popular curricula at the first level of higher education are Psychology, Medicine, Law, and Physiotherapy in regular studies, and Psychology, Early Years Teacher, and Administration of Social Work and Rehabilitation in block mode studies. At the master’s level, the specialisations with the largest number of applicants are Law, Teacher of Estonian as a Second Language, Educational Innovation, Special Education, and Service Design and Management.

According to Aune Valk, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs at the University of Tartu, the rise in the number of applications is gratifying. She mentioned that this increase is likely to continue for several more years, as members of Estonia’s numerically larger generations are reaching university age. Additionally, interest in master’s degrees among those over 30 has grown over the last decade. “I am sincerely pleased that master’s degrees are valued in society. We all need good doctors, teachers, and psychologists, and a master’s degree is required for these and many other top specialist professions,” said Valk.

In the autumn, approximately 4,600 new students are expected to study at the first and second levels of higher education at the University of Tartu. The new academic year starts on 1 September.
