Public lecture by Christoph Lampert about becoming a researcher

On 17 August from 15:30 to 17:00, you are invited to Delta Study Building for a public lecture by Prof. Christoph Lampert from the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA). Christoph Lampert will talk about machine learning and has intriguingly titled his talk “Behind the scenes: How does one become a (machine learning) researcher, and what does it mean to be one?”.

There is no need to register for the lecture, just show up to the Delta large lecture hall 1037.

Abstract:
Machine learning (=artificial intelligence) researcher might currently be one of the coolest jobs on the planet. But what does it take to become a machine learning researcher, and what do they actually do all day? The talk shines light on the steps for starting a scientific career (ideally in machine learning, but not only). In particular, how to successfully apply to a graduate school? And how to find a job in academia or industry research afterwards? I will also detail how the scientific community works behind the scenes: How do papers get published? How to build a scientific network and why? And where does the money for all of this come from?

After the talk there will be time for a Q&A.

The public lecture is  part of ESSCaSS (The Estonian Summer School in Computer and Systems Science), which this year focuses on machine learning and artificial intelligence.

ESSCaSS 2022 is supported by the University of Tartu ASTRA Project PER ASPERA (European Regional Development Fund).
