Join us for a bike ride between the Delta and Maarjamõisa study buildings!

As part of Tartu Mobility Week, all students, university staff and cycling enthusiasts are invited to join a bike ride on 16 September at 18:00 to get to know the most convenient cycling route between the Maarjamõisa study buildings, Vanemuise 46, and the Delta study building.

The City of Tartu, University of Tartu and Tartu Urban Cyclists Society have selected the safest and most convenient cycling route between the study buildings. The ride will begin at the bike share station at the Delta study building and end at the W. Ostwald bike share station at Chemicum. The ride, led by the Tartu Urban Cyclists Society, will last about 45 minutes. The cyclists will be greeted by representatives of the city, the university and students.

University of Tartu Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Aune Valk also rides a bike every day. "I dare say you can cycle through most of Tartu in 15 minutes. The university city and university life – including the need to move between different study buildings – offer a great opportunity for students to become cyclists. The more cyclists in the city, the more comfortable it is for everyone to get around. I have been witnessing this shift year by year," said Valk.

The route takes the cyclists from the Delta Centre along Narva mnt Street, across Kaarsild (the Arch Bridge), and through the Central Park to Vanemuise Street. At the end of the street, it turns into Vaksali Street and follows it to the railway overpass, and then continues along Riia Street to L. Puusepa Street, to Tartu University Hospital, Biomedicum, Chemicum, Physicum and the Institute of Technology. The route also passes the University of Tartu Library.

Check out the route and the locations of Tartu bike share stations on the UT website and on the Google Maps app. Future plans include marking the route with signs.

If you are among the first 200 students who want to take part in the joint bike ride on Monday, you can use the Tartu Smart Bike Share code 2024rattatee1609, which entitles you to a free day ticket. Note! The code is only valid on 16 September. See how to get the ticket using a code here.

The University of Tartu 2023 mobility survey showed that 17.2% of the bird’s eye distances travelled between study buildings in the autumn semester of 2022 were longer than 1 km and remained within half an hour. The most convenient cycling route between the Maarjamõisa and Delta study buildings makes up almost a third of the distances. As it is best to cycle this distance in spring and autumn, the university and the city decided to choose the most suitable route.

You can find bike racks for parking your bicycle next to the university buildings. In total, there are around 2,400 bike racks outside the university buildings, of which 1,410 are covered. You can get an overview of bike parking in the university's virtual tour by clicking on the bike icon on the building's exterior image. In addition to information on parking options, you can also see photos of all the bike racks.
