Application to micro-degree and micro-credential programmes at the University of Tartu is open

Adult learners are welcome to participate in micro-degree and micro-credential programmes starting in the autumn semester. The programmes are delivered in block mode or online, suitable for working people. Application to most programmes is open until 23 August.

In the autumn semester of the 2026/2027 academic year, the University of Tartu offers 53 micro-degree programmes in biology, entrepreneurship, economics and marketing, education, information technology, language and culture, environment, statistics, medicine and health, psychology, and law and society; including five new programmes. In addition, four micro-credential programmes are available.

This year, there are five English-taught micro-degree programmes, including two online, and one of the four micro-credential programmes is taught in English. The micro-degree programme “Video Game Narratives” is provided for the first time.

According to Aune Valk, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs at the University of Tartu, micro-credentials are here to stay – the changing labour market and new ways of working require continuous development of knowledge and skills, which can now be achieved more flexibly and quickly through micro-degree and micro-credential programmes. “Adult learners who are also working have responded very positively to this study opportunity, as it involves a lighter workload than degree study,” Valk added.

A micro-degree programme is a longer, comprehensive continuing education programme consisting of degree-study courses and designed to respond to the needs of the labour market and society. The volume of the university’s micro-degree programmes is 12–30 ECTS, and their typical duration is a semester or two. Participants who complete the programme can continue their studies in a degree programme to obtain a degree.

While micro-degree programmes consist of degree-study courses and the participants study alongside students, micro-credential programmes are organised in separate groups. The micro-credential programmes’ volume is 5–30 ECTS, and the typical duration is a semester.

Learners with at least upper secondary education are invited to apply for micro-degree programmes. However, some programmes have additional admission requirements.
