Estonian Honorary Consuls visit Tartu and the University of Tartu

During the Global Conference of Estonian Honorary Consuls, taking place from 19 to 23 June, nearly 120 Estonian Honorary Consuls from all over the world pay a visit to the University of Tartu.

On Friday, 21 June, the Mayor of Tartu Urmas Klaas, Rector of the University of Tartu Toomas Asser, Rector of the Estonian University of Life Sciences Ülle Jaakma, and CEO of Tartu 2024 Foundation Kuldar Leis introduce the city of Tartu and the smart city solutions at a meeting in the Delta Centre.

The Honorary Consuls are then given an overview of biomedicine and biotechnology in the Old Anatomical Theatre. Professor emeritus Mart Ustav opens the meeting and talks about the development of biogenetics and biomedicine in Estonia. There will also be a discussion on research-intensive entrepreneurship led by Tõnu Esko, Vice Rector for Development at the University of Tartu. After that, the Honorary Consuls will visit the Estonian Biobank.

On Saturday, 22 June, the Honorary Consuls go on a tour of South Estonia and visit the Tartu Observatory in Tõravere. In the evening, they will attend the Tartu Song Celebration.

Honorary Consuls of the Republic of Estonia are respected and high-ranking people who provide consular services and assistance to Estonian citizens abroad and represent the interests of Estonia in their home countries. During the five-day conference, they will be given an overview of Estonia’s most innovative and export-ready companies in the fields of information and communication technology, timber industry, green technologies, food, smart industry, circular economy and biomedicine.
