Online seminar on equity and sustainability

Soorej Jose Puthoopparambil from Uppsala University and Mark Rainey from the University of Galway will present their research on Tuesday, 3 October 2023, 17:00–18:30, as part of the ENLIGHT Equity and Sustainability online seminar series.

“Equity in migrant health – Challenges and opportunities“, by Dr Soorej Jose Puthoopparambil, Uppsala University

Migration and health of migrants are often considered as contested topics, although migrants form a substantial proportion of the population in many countries. Achieving equitable health for migrants is challenging as the political priorities change in the EU and globally. This talk will present some of the research that I carry out and how I try to work with translating evidence into policy and practice to promote refugee and migrant health.

“An Urban Lab Approach: Placemaking at the University-City Interface“, by Dr Mark Rainey, University of Galway

UrbanLab Galway was established in 2021 as home for collaborative research into placemaking and the future of Galway in particular. Taking stock of the projects the Lab has been involved in, including a public consultation on the development of a historic building in Galway, an intervention at the 2022 Galway International Arts Festival and the ongoing Horizon Europe INSITU project on the role of the creative industries in peripheral areas of Europe, this presentation considers how co-produced placemaking actions offer an alternative to highly centralised development at a local level in Ireland. Operating at the boundary between scholarship and urban practice, it also argues for an expanded understanding of the university-city interface in which academic institutions are part of an assemblage of actors that have role in shaping urban space.
