University of Tartu welcomes 800 new international students in the new academic year

In the 2024/2025 academic year, nearly 500 degree-seeking students and 300 international visiting students will start their studies in foreign-language curricula at the University of Tartu.

The University of Tartu’s orientation course, held at the Delta Centre from 28 to 30 August, introduces the university and courses to the 800 new international students and provides them with guidance on how to adapt to and cope with life in Estonia.

On the opening day of the event, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Aune Valk greeted the international students. During the course, representatives of the University of Tartu Counselling Centre, the Academic Sports Club and Library, the Tartu Welcome Centre, the Tartu 2024 Foundation and the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board speak about their services and possibilities. Kadri Suija, a general practitioner and Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Tartu, introduces the Estonian medical system.

The chief organiser of the course, Erasmus Student Exchange Coordinator Annika Kalda, believes that besides high-quality education, international students will gain valuable experience and knowledge for life while studying in Tartu. “We are proud that so many students worldwide have chosen to study at the University of Tartu. They will definitely enrich and diversify our student body,” Kalda added.

In the autumn semester of the 2023/2024 academic year, 700 international students started their studies at the University of Tartu. The largest-ever number of international students was admitted in the autumn semester of 2019. The number of international students studying at the University of Tartu has not recovered after the Covid-19 pandemic.
