We invite members of the university community to be more active, log their steps using the StepUp Pedometer Step Counter app, and take part in a friendly competition.
Being physically active is one of the foundations of wellbeing. The step challenge is a great opportunity to pay more attention to your daily physical activity. It is especially enjoyable to collect steps together with course mates or colleagues: walk to university or work, take a stroll together during your lunch break, or simply encourage one another to be more active.
After the end of the challenge, we will recognise six members of the university community who have logged the highest number of steps during the month. The top three will receive a prize package containing a custom-made University of Tartu sports jacket, a Nike sports shirt and a Tiksu stuffed toy. Those finishing in fourth to sixth place will receive a white University of Tartu hoodie, a warm bobble hat and a Tiksu stuffed toy.
In addition, everyone who records at least 200,000 steps (about 6,500 a day) in the StepUp app during October will be entered into a prize draw. Altogether, we will draw 20 prize packages, each containing a University of Tartu bobble hat, a Tiksu stuffed toy and a pair of Tiksu socks.
Although this is a competition, it is not about winning but taking part and enjoying movement. Please be honest with yourself and with other participants, and log only the steps that you have taken yourself.
The winners will be announced on 2 November. They will be contacted directly to arrange how they can collect their prizes.
How to participate in the step challenge?
To participate in the University of Tartu step challenge, use the StepUp app, which logs your steps and allows you to compare your results with those of other participants.
1. Download the StepUp app to your smartphone or smartwatch
If you do not already have StepUp, download it from the App Store or Google Play for free.
2. Open the University of Tartu step challenge joining link
Join the University of Tartu step challenge (on desktop, the link opens a QR code that you can scan with your phone.)
If StepUp is already installed on your phone or smartwatch, the joining link will take you directly to the app.
3. Join the group “Tartu Ülikooli sammukuu"
Confirm joining the group in the app. Once you have done that, the “Tartu Ülikooli sammukuu" group should appear on the app dashboard. In the group view, you can see your own step count, those of other group members, and the leaderboard.
4. Allow StepUp to track your steps
Give the app the permissions it needs to track your steps. On iPhones, StepUp uses Apple Health; on Android devices, it uses the relevant health or activity app.
5. Start moving to collect steps
Carry your smartphone with you or wear your smartwatch every day, and make sure your steps are being synced to StepUp. Only steps registered in the app during the challenge will count towards the competition.

Remember to open StepUp from time to time to ensure that your step data is correctly synced. If you use a smartwatch to count your steps, check before the start of the challenge that the watch data is being transferred to your phone’s health app and from there to StepUp.
