Associate Professor in Micro- and Nano-optics

Faculty of Science and Technology, Institute of Physics

The University of Tartu is the biggest and oldest centre of academic life in Estonia - we have over 4,000 employees and 14,000 students. The unique intellectual atmosphere and fine living and working environment that characterise Tartu have attracted prominent scientists and experts for almost 400 years. Join the university family!

Duties and responsibilities
  • Candidate is responsible for carrying out high level research and development activities in the fields of micro- and nano-optics and materials science.
  • The work involves studying various micro- and nano-optical systems, nanostructured materials, thin films, and plasmon and polariton systems using a variety of experimental measurement and analysis methods (UV-VIS, angle-dependent reflectance, absorption, transmittance, scattering, luminescence, and Raman spectroscopy, back focal plane spectroscopy, as well as scanning probe, electron, and ion microscopy, such as AFM, SEM, and FIB).
  • The design and modeling of micro- and nano-optical systems using Comsol Multiphysics software, along with the fabrication and characterization of these systems.
  • The candidate is expected to contribute to the development of research equipment in the field of optics and to manage and maintain optical and electron microscopes.
  • Applying for and managing research projects, planning and conducting experiments, analyzing results, publishing in internationally recognized scientific journals, and presenting findings at conferences and seminars in the field. The candidate will contribute to the international development of scientific and educational cooperation within their specialty.
  • Writing research proposals and attracting research funding on national, European, and international levels of different funding organizations including developing partnerships with businesses, and securing additional funding through collaborative projects.
  • Ensuring sufficient outreach by the team to make research understandable to the general public, as well as to industry and policy makers.
  • Teaching and supervising bachelor, master and PhD students.

Required qualifications
PhD degree or an equivalent qualification in physics or in related field.

Required experience
  • The candidate must be an experienced researcher in the field of micro- and nano-optics, with prior experience in studying various micro- and nanostructured optical systems (mainly plasmon and polariton systems) and proficiency in a range of experimental methods for micro- and nano-optics (optical spectroscopy and microscopy, back focal plane spectroscopy, experience with AFM, SEM, and FIB systems, and electron beam lithography).
  • Experience with FEI and Tescan electron microscopes, including managing and servicing these systems.
  • The candidate is also required to be knowledgeable and experienced in Comsol Multiphysics software and capable of using it for modelling micro- and nano-optical systems.
  • Experience in writing, securing, and managing research funding projects (amounting to at least 400,000 EUR over the past 6 years)
  • The candidate should have strong scientific writing skills and experience in international scientific collaboration. Experience in organizing international summer schools and conferences (at least 2 in the past 4 years) is also expected.
  • Experience supervising undergraduate and master’s students (having supervised at least 4 bachelor’s theses and 2 master’s theses).
  • Experience in promoting science through science popularization activities.

Required language skills
The candidate's English skills must be sufficient for communication in his/her speciality. For teaching, advanced Estonian language is necessary according to the legal framework in Estonia.

Personal qualities

Ability to work independently, to take responsibility for leading research and development projects and collaborate effectively with the research experts covering a broad range of research fields.
