Research Fellow in Nanomanipulation

Faculty of Science and Technology, Institute of Technology

The University of Tartu is the biggest and oldest centre of academic life in Estonia - we have over 4,000 employees and 14,000 students. The unique intellectual atmosphere and fine living and working environment that characterise Tartu have attracted prominent scientists and experts for almost 400 years. Join the university family!

Duties and responsibilities
  • The successful candidate is responsible for carrying out top-level scientific research and development activities in the fields of nanotechnology, nanomanipulations and solid state physics. The work involves experimental research in many cross-disciplinary fields (materials science, chemistry, and physics) including work with various nanostructured materials, such as metallic and metal-oxide nanoparticles, nanowires, composites and films. The research is based on a variety of experimental techniques, measurement tools and analysis methods (e.g. optical/confocal, scanning probe and electron microscopies, such as AFM, SEM, and TEM).
  • Responsibilities also include applying for and managing research projects, planning and conducting experiments, analyzing results, publishing in internationally recognized top-level scientific journals, presenting findings at conferences and seminars and to the general public in popular science media.
  • The candidate has to teach and supervise thesis in all higher education levels.

Required qualifications
PhD or an equivalent qualification.

Required experience
  • The candidate must be an active and experienced researcher in the field of nanotechnologies, with prior experience in nanomanipulations and characterization of mechanical properties of nanostructures.
  • The candidate should have proficiency in a range of techniques to characterise nanomaterials and to further experiment with them: various microscopy techniques including AFM and SEM. Experience in synthesis of metal nanostructures (wires, particles) is recommended.
  • The candidate should demonstrate the ability to perform independent research, including planning experiments and meeting deadlines, as well as strong collaboration and communication skills to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • The candidate should have fluent scientific writing skills, strong publication and citation metrics, h-index ≥10 (Google Scholar).
  • The candidate must have acquired teaching experience as the main lecturer and/or extensive experience as a teaching assistant in courses in the relevant field. The candidate is also expected to have experience in supervising B.Sc., M.Sc., or Ph.D. students (having supervised at least several B.Sc., M.Sc., or Ph.D./doctoral theses to completion). The candidate is also expected to have experience in reviewing scientific manuscripts and students’ theses as well as promoting science through science popularization activities (popular science articles, lectures for general public etc.).

Required language skills
The candidate's skills in Estonian and English must be fluent for communication in the field of speciality as well as for teaching at the advanced level at the University of Tartu.

Additional information on remuneration
Remuneration based on UT salary rules.
