25-27 February, the managerial staffs of two Vietnamese schools of medicine visit the University of Tartu. Together with Estonians they participate in a seminar discussing the possibilities of cooperation. Thereafter, 29 Vietnamese will shadow researchers of the Faculty of Medicine of UT with the purpose of experiencing the practical part of studies in Estonia and using the knowledge gained here to improve the quality of studies in Vietnam.

European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) Board of Association renowned professor of Haematology and Oncology Hele Everaus EBMT Clinical Service Award in recognition of an outstanding life-time achievement in bone marrow transplantation and contribution to the EBMT.

Estonian companies in cooperation with the University of Tartu developed a method for analysing human genetic data. The method enables gene banks, including the Estonian Genome Centre, to study the data without disclosing them to each other. This solves the problem of the potential identification of study participants through public genetic and genealogy databases as was recently reported in the journal Science.

On Friday, 22 February at 1 p.m., the University of Tartu will celebrate the 95th anniversary of Estonian independence with a commemoration concert. At the commemoration, the Ernst Jaakson scholarship of 12,000 euro which is the largest in Estonia, will be handed over and 38 university employees will obtain badges of honour of the University of Tartu.

On February 19 the board of the Estonian Research Council approved the funding decisions concerning personal research grants. The biggest funding goes to the researchers at the University of Tartu, whose research is being supported with 1,343,019 euros.

The work environment lab of the University of Tartu now can boast the most accurate measurement of interior climate in Estonia. Climate-related comfort in both the home and office can now be evaluated.

The Committee of Estonian National Research Awards announced the laureates for the annual Estonian National Research Awards. Year by year, the number of people participating in continuing education at the University of Tartu is increasing. Co-operation with companies, public sector establishments and various target audiences has brought over 33,700 such students to acquire new knowledge in nearly 1,500 courses in 2012, thus cementing UT’s position as the largest provider of continuing education in Estonia.

On 4th of February, the Minister of Education and Research approved the volume of institutional research grant for 2013. The 21 research groups of the University of Tartu were allocated a grant in the total sum of 4,545,500 euro for the years 2013-2018.

When asked about what disturbs them on the Internet, children consider video sharing environments such as YouTube the most dangerous, according to a fresh report by the EU Kids Online project. The report entitled “In Their Own Words: What Disturbs Children on the Internet?” is based on children’s answers to an open inquiry. Estonian vocabulary course for beginners starts on 4th of March and lasts until 20th of December 2013. The course is aimed at the adult learners. This course is suitable for people, who want to improve their skills in learning Estonian. Students will gain introductory knowledge of Estonian and Estonian vocabulary and will be able to use the vocabulary covered during the course in everyday situations. The other aspects of the Estonian language (grammatical structure, etc.) will also be introduced.

The Natural Museum of the University of Tartu will participate in the major all-European project EU BON (Building the European Biodiversity Observation Network), the aim of which is to create access to the abundance of data about biodiversity for scientists, managers and the public.
