On 23 May 2025, Minister of Education and Research Kristina Kallas approved the results of the external evaluation of Estonian research and development. The University of Tartu was the only institution in Estonia to receive a positive evaluation in all six fields: natural sciences, engineering and technology, medical and health sciences, agriculture and veterinary sciences, social sciences, and humanities and the arts.

In the competition for entrepreneurship promoters 2025, organised by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, the Kobar innovation hub and the technology school // kood were named Estonia’s best entrepreneurship promoters. They will represent Estonia in the European Enterprise Promotion Awards competition in Copenhagen in October.

Over the years, the building has deteriorated and become too small for the needs and possibilities of teaching and studies, so it will soon undergo renovation. After that, the building will also house the University of Tartu Tallinn office.

Meelis Pärtel, Professor of Botany at the University of Tartu, was elected to Academia Europaea, the Pan-European Academy of Humanities, Letters and Sciences. Pärtel will be active in the academy’s Ecology and Evolution section, where he sees strengthening connections between ecology and other research fields as his most important task.

The University of Tartu’s podcast for prospective international students, “Tiksu to UniTartu”, is back this summer with a second season.

In collaboration with the University of Tartu and the city of Tartu, the green area in the Maarjamõisa district is becoming an urban nature oasis partially maintained by Gotland sheep.

The renovation of the area in front of the university’s main building has begun. The work will be done in several stages and last until early autumn.

On 19 May, the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia Zhanna Andreasyan visited the University of Tartu and meets Vice Rector for Research Mari Moora, students and teaching staff.

On 21 and 26 May, university members are welcome to take part in communal work in the Maarjavälja green area. Volunteers can plant local species and build fencing for urban sheep.

At the beginning of April, the team of the UT Institute of Computer Science and Information Technology Office, together with the Estonian Defence League Cyber Defence Unit, participated in the cyber defence exercise Locked Shields 2025 Partners Run and came first among 14 teams.
