Omicron strain detected in waste water in various places over Estonia
This week’s results of the waste water monitoring study led by the University of Tartu show that the overall coronavirus concentrations are fairly stable. However, the initial analysis of virus strains in waste water detected the Omicron variant in several places in Estonia.

ENLIGHT Rectors endorse ENLIGHT Sustainability Engagement

Startup Lab enhances competence of entrepreneurship teachers in Ukraine
In November, a new international cooperation project UnivEntre was launched led by the University of Tartu Startup Lab. The project focuses on improving the efficiency of the Ukrainian higher education system to promote the country's innovation capacity and the quality of education. Over the next two years, Startup Lab will educate business lecturers at Ukrainian universities and share Estonia's experiences on how to make cooperation between universities and the business sector effective. The project will run until 1 June 2024.

Waste water analysis shows the coronavirus is receding
This week’s results of the waste water analysis led by the University of Tartu show that the amount of coronavirus has notably decreased throughout Estonia since last week. The situation has also markedly improved in south-east Estonia.

Coronavirus amount in waste water varies considerably between regions
This week’s results of the waste water monitoring study led by the University of Tartu show that while the overall virus situation remains fairly stable, regional variations can be observed. South Estonia continues to stand out with higher virus amounts, but no virus was found this time in samples from the islands of Hiiumaa and Saaremaa.

Tartu Christmas City will include a Mars rover's test base
Starting from this Sunday, everyone can explore the Mars Rover's Test Base at the Town Hall Square in Tartu. The test base is located in a glass pavilion and in it, a miniature rover will be driving on a surface that mimics the one of the red planet. The test base will bring Mars closer to people as it might be the second planet in our Solar System that human will set foot on.

ENLIGHT Interdisciplinary Proposal-Writing Workshop for doctoral students “Equity and Sustainability” to take place at the University of Tartu
The ENLIGHT Interdisciplinary Proposal-Writing Workshop “Equity and Sustainability” will take place on 14–18 February 2022 at the University of Tartu. The event aims to provide a platform for cross-disciplinary collaboration for the ENLIGHT network universities’ researchers. With the anchor topic “Equity and Sustainability,” participants are invited to collectively look for solutions to the challenges indicated by the topics of the labs. During the event, five teams will be formed, each comprising two senior researchers and up to seven PhD students.

Major investment helps University of Tartu spin-off take genetic tests for cancer prevention to UK market
The Estonian health technology enterprise Antegenes has signed a long-term strategic partnership agreement with Everything Genetic Ltd to introduce the genetic tests used for cancer prevention to the healthcare system of the United Kingdom. Together with the agreement, the Estonian enterprise received an investment of 500,000 euros.

The situation is finally starting to improve also in Põlva County, which has stood out with the highest infection rates in the current wave.

This week’s results of the waste water analysis led by the University of Tartu show an increase in virus levels. Compared to the index describing the average situation in Estonia, the virus level is the highest in the waste water of places in southern and central Estonia. Larger cities in Ida-Viru County stand out by low levels of the virus.

Latvian and Estonian heads of state visited the University of Tartu
Latvian President Egils Levits paid a working visit to Estonia on Friday and had a meeting with President Alar Karis. In the afternoon, the two presidents visited the University of Tartu, where they were welcomed by Rector Toomas Asser, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Aune Valk, and Vice Rector for Research Kristjan Vassil.
