Estonian University of Life Sciences celebrates 175 years of teaching veterinary medicine

On 6 October at 12, a commemorative plaque will be unveiled on the wall of the Von Bock House of the University of Tartu, as the Estonian University of Life Sciences celebrates the 175th anniversary of teaching veterinary medicine. The first patient – a horse – was admitted to the Von Bock House on 13 October 1848.

The programme starts at 10 at the Town Hall Square: veterinarians from the Animal Clinic of the Estonian University of Life Sciences give advice on the health of pets, children can bring their toys to the Teddy Bear Clinic, and veterinary students speak about dogs’ health and training. Police dogs with handlers will be present, as well as a horse-drawn carriage for fun rides.

At noon, Toomas Tiirats, Director of the Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences of the Estonian University of Life Sciences, Ülle Jaakma, Rector of the Estonian University of Life Sciences, and Toomas Asser, Rector of the University of Tartu, will ride the horse-drawn carriage to Von Bock House, where a commemorative plaque will be unveiled.

Tartu Veterinary Institute started its activities as an independent higher education institution in 1848. Veterinary education moved under the University of Tartu in 1919 and was taught at the university until 1951.
