Series of lectures on dynamics of contemporary India

From November 25. until December 6. professor Rajsekhar Basu from Kolkata Univeristy and Vilnius University will give public lectures "Understanding the dynamics of contemporary India: a quest in interpreting the complexities of Asian democracy"

The study of contemporary India would open up a diverse range of themes and interpretations relating to development, uneven growth, high GDP , poverty and a mad rush for privatisation of the state controlled economic institutions. At the political level, it seeks to draw our attention to the transition from a single party rule in a multi party democracy to the coalition politics, which is hardly based on ideology, but more on the immediate gains of power and privilege. But, while these trends are visible at the level of organised politics, diverse social and political movements, based on ethnic, caste , community, territorial and regional affiliations seem to question the foundations of the nation state, whose secular credentials are challenged by the post modernist discourses, which publicise its upper caste Hindu orientation.
