Active research, development and teaching in biotechnology, synthetic biology, molecular and cell biology, plant biology, materials and environmental technology, pharmacy, robotics and information and communication technologies will take place in the building. The building will have state-of-the-art laboratories and technical rooms, staff offices, seminar and meeting rooms and rest areas. The building will have a separate study section with lecture halls, computer labs, seminar rooms and teaching laboratories, as well as a study and rest area for students.
The planned location of the academic and research building is on the Maarjavälja property, between the Physicum building and Sanatooriumi street. Participants in the competition are expected to design an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient building that uses construction and finishing materials with the lowest CO2 footprint possible.
The jury of the competition will comprise Director of Administration Kstina Noormets, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology Leho Ainsaar, chartered architects of the Estonian Association of Architects Tõnis Arjus, Tiit Sild and Jüri Siim and the Lead Architect of the Architecture Service of Tartu City Government Ivo-Sven Riet. In addition, Aire Priks, Head of the Detailed Plan Service of the Department of Urban Planning, Land Survey and Use of Tartu City Government, and Viljo Vider, Head of Institutional Development Service of the Estates Office of the University of Tartu, will be included in the jury as experts.
The deadline for entries is 19 October. The winning entry will be announced by the end of October.
