Purpose:
The aim of the course is to provide basic knowledge and skills for psychological counsellors for working with substance misuse and behavioural maladaptations.
Target group:
Participants in the professional year of psychologist-counselor; master's degree in psychology.
Outcome:
A student who has completed the course:
* knows the main mechanisms of misuse and addiction
* understands assessment principles and is able to identify them in their work;
* evaluates suitability of different interventions based on assessment results;
* is able to create a realistic intervention plan and relapse prevention plan for a client.

Master's degree in psychology

Tõnu Jürjen - certified alcohol and other drug counselor since 1980; certified problem gambling counselor since 2001; certified anger management specialist; member of the Motivational Interviewing Network (MINT).

1. Co-morbidity – holistic assessment of what is presented in the 1st session
- What comes first? Co-presentation and how it effects treatment protocol
- Differential diagnosis (ADHD/bi-polar; depression; anxiety)

Drugs of abuse and modes of use (alcohol; cannabis; prescription drugs; MDMA, cyber-discussion, amphetamine)

Estonian statistics

How do see this in own work and personal lives – small group discussion

Assessment and engagement – role play both personal handoff and referral out. How do you follow up with the client?
- When to refer – addiction vs harmful usage
- How the system works
- Clinical Interview (start of the discussion)
- Real/role play

Medication overview

Therapeutic interventions – Short presentation and lead the discussion on topic (brief; SFT; behavioral; meditation and mindfulness; contingency management; working with significant others)

For a pass students are asked to: (a) participate actively on all four days, (b) review and present on one chapter in Treating Addiction (Miller et al. 2019), (c) be prepared to present their findings to the group, and (d) submit a clinical interview outline that may be used in their clinical setting.
