Purpose:
The aim of the course is to develop basic understanding of motivational interviewing (MI) and create a foundation for using MI in everyday practice.
Target group:
Master's degree in psychology and participation in the professional year of a psychologist-counselor or psychologist's vocation.
Outcome:
A student who has completed the course:
- has a basic understanding of the concepts of motivational interviewing;
- is able to analyze conversations through the lens of motivational interviewing;
- is able to demonstrate aspects of motivational interviewing Spirit in a typical consultation;
- is able to use core conversation skills for connecting and enhancing motivation of the client at least episodically if intended.
Starting conditions:
Master's degree in psychology and participation in the professional year of a psychologist-counselor or psychologist's vocation.
Teachers:
Tõnu Jürjen - school psychologist level 8, psychologist-counselor level 7, experienced motivational interviewing trainer; member of the Motivational Interviewing Network (MINT).
Margo Bristow - certified alcohol and other drug counselor since 1980; certified problem gambling counselor since 2001; certified anger management specialist; member of the Motivational Interviewing Network (MINT).

Studies and teaching takes place in appropriate classrooms, which have the required teaching equipment and meet the health and safety requirements.

Grading method:
Practical tasks in seminars, self-analysis based on the recording of one of the learner's sessions.
Grading criteria:
Practical tasks: the learner tests the learned skills and adjusts his activities based on the feedback received Self-analysis: the analysis is based on the basic concepts of motivational interviewing, points out both the learner's strengths and areas for development, is based on specific examples from the recording
