Ene-Margit Tiit and Krista Aru are honorary citizens of Tartu

On 23 January, Tartu City Council announced recipients of the titles of Honorary Citizen of Tartu and the Star of Tartu honorary decorations. Ene-Margit Tiit, Professor emerita of the University of Tartu, and Krista Aru, the recipient of the Contribution to Estonian national identity award 2024 and former director of the UT Library, were awarded the title of the Honorary Citizen of Tartu.

Ene-Margit Tiit, Professor emerita at the University of Tartu, is the founder of the field of mathematical statistics in Estonia and an active advocate of statistical literacy. She has also made a significant contribution to social sciences. She is one of the main developers of the Estonian register-based census methodology, and her work to improve the census quality has received international acclaim.  

Krista Aru, a journalism historian and museologist, has worked passionately to preserve and ensure the continuity of Estonian cultural heritage. The history of Estonian journalism and interpreting the social significance of Jaan Tõnisson are central to her research and creative work. Krista Aru has worked as the director of three important memory institutions: the Estonian Literary Museum, the Estonian National Museum and the University of Tartu Library.

The title of the honorary citizen was also granted to Andrus Ansip, former long-term mayor of Tartu and prime minister of Estonia. The recipients of the Star of Tartu honorary decoration are Mare Kõiva, leading research fellow at the Estonian Literary Museum, Reet Piiri, curator at the Estonian National Museum, and Aivar Tommingas, actor at Vanemuine Theatre. The title of Honorary Citizen of Tartu is given in recognition of lifelong outstanding merits to the city of Tartu. The Star of Tartu decoration is awarded for special merits to the city of Tartu. The titles and decorations will be awarded on 22 February at the ceremony dedicated to the 107th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia at the Estonian National Museum.
