From 10 to 16 February, the University of Tartu will have a thematic week for Women in Science, aiming to underline the role of women and girls in science, break gender stereotypes and encourage women to pursue a career in science. During the week, a discussion on ensuring equal opportunities is held, and the university’s gender statistics are presented. It is also possible to take a curator’s tour of the exhibition in the university’s museum and see a travelling exhibition about astronomers.

On 11 February at 15:00, the panel discussion “Does the University of Tartu need an equal treatment commissioner?” is held in the lobby of the Institute of Modern Languages and Cultures (Lossi 3), with live broadcast on UTTV. The discussion is in Estonian.

A travelling exhibition of women astronomers will be open in the White Hall of the University of Tartu Museum from 12 February to 23 March. The exhibition was compiled by the Spanish Astronomical Society (SEA) and the Association of Spanish Scientists in the Baltic States (ACE Baltic) and translated and complemented by Visiting Research Fellow María José Benito Castaño and Associate Professor Maret Einasto, both from the Department of Physics of Galaxies and Cosmology at Tartu Observatory.

During the thematic week, the University of Tartu and the Estonian Young Academy of Sciences invite researchers to participate in a social media campaign highlighting the work and achievements of women scientists. The campaign calls on researchers to share briefly and in a free form what important problems their research is helping to solve. Anyone writing about the Day of Women in Science on social media is encouraged to use the hashtags #NaisedTeaduses and #WomenInScience. Researchers taking part in the campaign are also invited to add the pink or white logo of the day to the images (see the gallery below).

Badges and mugs with the logo are available at the University of Tartu gift shop and the UT Museum’s Cathedral Shop. Those who are faster can also get stickers.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science has been observed since 2015. In Estonia, the day has been celebrated since 2021, led by the University of Tartu and the Estonian Young Academy of Sciences. Every year, the Baltic national academies of sciences and the National Commissions for UNESCO also organise the scholarship competition For Women in Science.
